Magnus Thorén - The Slow Within
Wie aus einer fernen Galaxie herangebeamt glimmen sie als Leuchtkörper auf und drohen sogleich im nächsten Moment wieder zu verglühen. Mehr Lemuren als leibhaftige Lebewesen aus Fleisch und Blut treten Magnus Thoréns vage Figurationen aus dem ohnehin dünnhäutigen malerischen Fonds seiner Bilder hervor. So unwirklich ihr Erscheinungsbild vor Augen tritt, so ätherisch fällt auch ihre malerische Hülle aus: Beine, Hände, Partien von Gesichtern zeichnen sich vereinzelt derart fragmentarisch und diffus ab, als rührten sie von den Langzeitbelichtungen der sogenannten Geisterfotografie respektive Daguerrotypie im 19. Jahrhundert her. Irisierende Flecken flimmern über die Oberfläche und zehren wie punktuelle Brandherde zusätzlich das körperlich schwer Fassbare auf. Thoréns zwischen Gegenständlichem und Abstraktion oszillierende Malerei hat wahrnehmungsphänomenologisch etwas von Nachbildern an sich, wie sie sich etwa beim direkten Blick in das Sonnenlicht oder zu monotonem Blick auf Farbflächen einstellen. As beamed from a remote galaxy they begin to glow as luminaries and immediately impend to vanish the next moment. The vague figurations of Magnus Thorén, which emerge from the already thin-skinned painterly fonds, are more lemurs than living creatures of flesh and blood. As unreal their appearance occurs, as ethereal is their painterly cover: legs, hands, parts of faces appear sporadicly in such a fragment and diffuse way as if originating from bulb exposures of the so called ghost photography or daguerreotype of the 19th century. Iridescent spots flicker across the surface and additionally absorb - just as individual fire sources do - the physically barley comprehensible. In ways of perceptional phenomenology, Thoréns oscillatory painting, which moves in between the figurative and the abstract, has something of echo images which appear by directly looking into the sun or by gazing too long at color fields.
It seems, that the actual invisible ‘aura’ of entities could suddenly be made visible, hadn’t the term ‘auratic’ been misused by esoteric metaphysics. Magnus Thorén is not interested in spiritualistic hocus-pocus. He much more invokes the transformation of states of being, the evaporation and liquefaction of the physical, the rites of transgression from earthly existence to cosmological, astronomical constellations. Accordingly, Thorén allegorically describes his painterly process: “The snake gets rid of its skin and wiggles along the highway to a place where palm trees are white and soaked in flames.”
Magnus Thoréns knows in a stupendous way to play on a whole claviature of different kinds of styles. He masters schlieren abstraction and the all over of tachism spots and light phenomena, as well as monochromatic, in itself structured painting or through the wafts of mist blurry figuration. And still, all these eclectic varieties of contemporary painting derive from Thoréns imaginary source: “the ruin of modern times that awakens the echo of gravity and grace” as he paraphrases. Even his pseudo romantic landscapes develop their atmospheric discrepancy from that peculiar state of uncertainty of a poisonous appearance of a dystopia which lies in the middle of nowhere in between the present and centuries-old eras. So Thorén is amongst contemporary artists such as Peter Doig or Daniel Richter who receive their disoriented reflections, for their gravity freed, neo-surreal art from symbolic paintings of Edvard Munch, Pierre Bonnard and other protagonists of the 19th century. In a hallucinating way, Thoréns illusive painterly cosmos brings the entering into states of dreams to mind.
Concerning Munch, there are even more multifarious connections. While the excitement of his Norwegian predecessor went toward the tremendous technological achievements of photography and the fascination for x-ray or sunbeams which actually expressed a latent commitment to the modern era, Thorén choses the reversed path. Weather he outlines x-ray-like silhouettes or light creative silhouettes, the seemingly photographical aesthetic leads back to a phantomlike existence. This is indicated by those scheme-like portraits, like the merely, sheer, glazing one of Marilyn Monroe, that mysteriously remind of the burial shroud with physiognomic imprints. When Thorén talks about „ 100 more images are hidden behind one image“, he does not want his work to be considered as painting about painting. He much more indicates the quality of impression lightening up the dark zone of the collective memory instantly. They are illuminations from a half-ghostly and a half-familiar world. Referred to Thorén: “ images of infestation, faded, hidden, blurred.” Accordingly, his completely object free obscure sky-scenes scenarios seem to be illuminated by an inner light source that is sometimes cold, sometimes warm. Thorén appears to have transferred the precise nuanced night-scene paintings of the baroque painter Adam Elsheimer into an eventually non religious zone. To him the mystery of life stays abstract and in his paintings it is: “a celebration of the whole gruesome miracle.”
Nowadays the former bitter controversy in formalism between figuration and abstraction lead ideologically by critics after World War II seems ridiculous. The works of Magnus Thorén reveal once more that this polarization was scattered into pieces a long time ago and that the artist can uncontroversially move between the shimmering chimeras of the material world. His cosmos captures the continuously ephemeral condition of our world in twilighted paintings as imprints of the transitory. Transformation is the key word of his painterly ceremony which also seems to be familiar with the existence of black holes, representing the transition from matter to nothingness. To express it with the words of the quantum physicist Hans-Peter Dürr: “Basically there is no such thing as matter. At least not in the way we think of it. For us this is hard to imagine. There are only structures of relation, constant change, vitality. Primarily, there only exist correlation, a connection without matter based foundation. Something that only can be experienced spontaneously and not be grasped. Matter and energy only appear secondarily, quasi as coagulated, solidified spirit.”
